Celebrity Escape Room Enthusiasts

By: Alexandra Gudagno

Celebrities: they’re just like us (well, if “us” were all exceedingly rich, talented, good-looking and worshiped by the masses). One thing we DO have in common with the Hollywood elite is our mutual love of escape rooms! This article counts down some of our favorite celebrity escape room enthusiasts.

Why Do Celebrities Love Escape Rooms

Celebrities Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson recently highlighted escape rooms as a great date night option. As a result, we got thinking about other celebrities who LOVE escape rooms. And why wouldn’t they? With private bookings, you’re locked in and invited to escape reality with your friends.

Escape rooms are the perfect place for celebrities to go out while avoiding the crowds and enjoy some quality time with loved ones. With that being said, it just makes sense that there are so many celebrity escape room enthusiasts! Trap Door presents our top 5 favorite celebrity escape room sightings and celebrity escape room enthusiasts.

5. Ariana Grande

Who knew escape rooms are one of this celebrity’s “favorite things?” In a clip on The Late Show with James Cordon, Ariana Grande revealed that she loves escape rooms and has done over 300 of them. The singer also shared that she is obsessed with Hallloween and being scared. That statement was quickly put to the test when Cordon, an escape room first-timer, accompanied Grande through a Halloween-themed escape room.

“You told me it was an escape room, not hell!”

“You told me it was an escape room, not hell!” the Disney star infamously remarked about the particularly dark and scary escape room. “I don’t want to touch a person! I don’t want to touch a person! Is there a person in here?” Grande repeatedly asked tentatively before looking for clues in the dark. Okay, so maybe celebrity escape room “enthusiast” was a bit of a misnomer for Grande . . .

Grande’s Love/Hate Relationship with Escape Rooms

Grande hilariously cursed at the first actor to jumpscare her and the two celebrities were even involved in a scuffle with a zombie actor! While the zombie was writing on the floor in the final portion of the escape room, Ariana Grande was so startled she began running in circles around the actor and tripped, hurting her wrist! This little snafu doesn’t keep Grande from continuing her love of escape rooms, as she posted a clip of an escape room she did with her husband Dalton Gomez shortly after they were married.

4. Will Smith

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air took Spiderman (respectively, actors Will Smith and Tom Holland) to an escape room their first time meeting each other as an ice breaker for their 2019 movie Spies in Disguise. Will Smith shared a video of his first meeting with co-star Tom Holland on his YouTube channel. This video features the pair being blindfolded and sent into separate entrances of the military-prison style escape room.

Team-building with Celebrities in Escape Rooms

Smith and Holland had to work together using skills like Morse Code and figuring out important dates to open a padlock. The stars high-fived and embraced after escaping with 4-plus minutes to spare. They even hyped each other up about their scores and joked about how they felt like they had “done something for their country.” What an amazing testimony for escape rooms as a team-building activity!

3. Barack Obama

That’s right! Former POTUS Barack Obama visited an escape room during his Christmas vacation and made it out with 12 seconds to spare. The former president took his daughters, Sasha and Malia, as well as some friends, to an escape room in Hawaii one Christmas Eve.

Celebrity Escape Room Excitement

“Our employees were all having panic attacks out of sheer excitement,” Breakout Games CEO Baysinger said. “It’s a real special thing to meet a president, especially to be able to interact with them for a full hour.”

Some suspect the above Tweet sent out by Breakout Waikiki, challenging President Obama, was responsible for sparking his interest in playing an escape room.

2. Chris Evans

It seems as though Spiderman isn’t the only Marvel celebrity escape room fan. Chris Evans once took over a Boston comic book store to create the “ultimate Captain America-themed escape room” and prank some unsuspecting customers.

Chris Evans also offered himself up as part of the prize package to sweeten the deal when fans were encouraged to participate in a contest hosted by Omaze to benefit Charities Aid Foundation America. One lucky winner and her friends got to be trapped in an escape room with Captain America himself!

If that isn’t enough Marvel celebrity for you, check out this video of Anthony Mackie, Letitia Wright, Sebastian Stan, and Benedict Cumberbatch playing a Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame-themed escape room.

History

The idea came to Tone Purzycki back in 2011 after he wrote a screenplay that developed into a live-streaming game. The game revolved around an actor trapped in a situation and the audience had to solve puzzles to figure out where he was trapped. The “Find Me Event” had more than 1,000 people playing over the course of several hours. After the success of several other streaming events, the idea of an escape room was born.
